The special counsel report found that Biden willfully retained classified information, including top secret documents, and knew he was in possession of some documents as far back as 2017. House Oversight Committee Republicans, who have separately investigated Biden’s handling of classified documents, criticized Hur’s report before it was even released or delivered to Congress. “Most notably, after being given multiple chances to return classified documents and avoid prosecution, Mr. Trump allegedly did the opposite.” Hur wrote. “Among the places Mr. Biden’s lawyers found classified documents in the garage was a damaged, opened box containing numerous hanging folders, file folders, and binders,” the report said. In 2021, Republicans retook the Virginia House. The Virginia Senate wasn’t up in 2021 – state senators face their voters every four years. That one time was in 2011, when the two parties ended up tied in the state Senate, with the Republican lieutenant governor serving as the tie-breaker. Democrats hold the thinnest of majorities in the state Senate, while Republicans narrowly control the state House. In those elections, Democrats have been greatly outperforming the Democratic baseline (measured by comparing their candidates’ performances with Biden’s in 2020).

Facing an escalating border crisis and pleas for relief by Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike, the Biden administration will begin flying Venezuelans back to their home country if they are here illegally, administration officials said Thursday. It's unclear what effect the deportations might have on a growing migrant crisis with no end in sight. The Biden administration also announced in the Federal Register on Thursday that it would waive a long list of environmental and construction rules to allow construction of parts of a border wall Biden has consistently criticized. "There is presently an acute and immediate need to construct physical barriers and roads in the vicinity of the border of the United States in order to prevent unlawful entries into the United States" along certain parts of the border, the notice said. Biden downplayed the notice Thursday as a matter out of his hands.

But a potential rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump could upend that dynamic, polling suggests, with most voters saying their decisions would come down largely to their feelings about Trump. In CNN’s exit poll following the last presidential election, when Trump was the sitting incumbent and Biden the challenger, 54% of voters cited Trump as the bigger factor in their vote. Anti-Trump voters – Biden voters who are motivated largely by antipathy for Trump – make up another 30% of the potential electorate. While 89% in this group agree that any Republican would be better than Biden, just 64% say Trump would be better than any Democrat. Nearly 1 in 5 anti-Trump voters say they’d back Haley (18%) or former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (19%) over Biden.
